I know I’m not alone when I say that June 19, 1865 has only had some significance for me in the past few years.  The fact that that date is now a Federal holiday, means it is embedded in the American consciousness and impervious to erasure.  This Congressional act puts our educational system on notice, exposing its dereliction of duty.  We, The People must continue to act as this country’s moral compass, to ensure that those who wish to reorder and reshape history in order to further disenfranchise Black and Brown communities become the minority.  For me, Juneteenth Day is the celebration of freedom and truth.
